“Lawrence and I are deeply touched by this gesture of the Western North Carolina Conference United Methodist Women. UMW has a strong and special place in our hearts.
United Methodist Women means ‘mission’ to me. Long before globalization became a much-used word, women in mission to women and children all over the world was the reason for the organization of United Methodist Women.I love the distinction of the UMW within the denomination. UMW is the lay-woman's particular niche. Of course, clergy persons and men are members, but only lay-women can be officers. UMW members identify and nurture potential leaders who are lay-women. Rather than exclusivity, this requirement recognizes the role UMW plays and the distinctive contribution of women in growth and change through education and awareness. The UMW have known for eons that a woman can be president!
My mother, Lucy Fowler, was a conference officer of the Woman's Society of Christian Service. I inherited her WNCC officer pin that has beautiful little pearls on the cross and her special membership pin from WSCS of Myers Park UMC in 1976. In 1947 some dear members of Spruce Pine WSCS contributed so that I have a ‘baby membership’ certificate.
In each church Lawrence has served and in the South Carolina Conference for eight years, we have counted on UMW for steadfast, unwavering commitment to mission.
What a joy to return to our home conference and discover that UMW had continued in purpose and had been blessed by God. Anything that Lawrence or I can do for the Western North Carolina Conference United Methodist Women we are privileged to do - to express our deep gratitude for the dedication to the Purpose of our lay-women's organization.
You made a place for me as a sister UMW member who happened to be your Bishop's spouse.”

IT MAKES
MISSION POSSIBLE
The
Undesignated
Mission
Giving of United Methodist Women
supports mission projects and mission personnel around the world.
With your Mission Giving, you help to relieve suffering,
and to make the world a better place for women, children, and youth.
Mission Giving is the foundation for mission work through United Methodist
Women. Your giving enables a full and consistent response to human need,
especially the needs of women, children and youth. It affirms the wholeness of
the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a commitment to its proclamation in word and
deed. Mission Giving strengthens basic programs and projects. It also makes
possible emergency response and exploration of new and evolving areas of
mission.
There are five channels of Mission Giving:
Pledge to Mission
Special Mission Recognition
Gift to Mission
Gift in Memory
World Thank Offering
Challenge yourself to give in all five channels!

The PURPOSE of
United Methodist Women
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women
whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through
Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand

church.
