Call to Prayer & Self Denial

Calling all United Methodist Women to Prayer and Self Denial!
Has your unit made plans to celebrate Call to Prayer and Self Denial this year? This special observance is usually held the first few months of each new year. The theme for 2010 is “Property Makes Mission Possible".
The 2010 Call to Prayer and Self-Denial offering fund will provide for capital expenditures at mission institutions related to the Women’s Division of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Women’s national policy-making arm. In the United States, these institutions include community centers, women’s residences, schools, colleges and residential treatment centers. Internationally, these institutions include hostels, residences, hospitals, clinics, schools, and community and day-care centers. The offering will be divided between U.S. and international projects. Funds from this observance will be used to expand facilities for new and emerging programs, as well as for repairs and renovations to maintain and enhance established ministries with women, children and youth.
The Quiet Day service for the Call to Prayer and Self Denial is in our 2010 United Methodist Women Program Book -- Let's Get Together. It will also available here on our website...click here to download a PDF of the quiet day service.
Prayer from
the 2010 Call to Prayer & Self Denial Prayer Card:
(United Methodist Women members may make copies of this prayer for
use in their units)
Gracious God, as we enter into a period of prayer and reflection, give us the clarity to remember your goodness in our lives and the lives of those we love and hold dear.
Keep before us the fact that we are fortunate, and that you expect us to share your love with others in whatever way we can.
Guide us on this journey of self-denial. Show us the path you want us to take.
May our actions be what you desire your children to do.
This we ask in the name of your son, Jesus the Christ. Amen.
Local units share in the Call to
Prayer and Self Denial Observance in a variety of ways. In
2008, one
local unit in the Waynesville District...Love's Chapel UMC, located
in Sylva, North Carolina...used the quiet day service
during Sunday morning worship, sharing in the service with
the whole congregation. They placed an offering plate at the
kneeling rail, and the congregation came to the altar to share their
gifts to mission. The Call to Prayer offering collected that
morning was over $300! What a neat way to share United
Methodist Women with the congregation!
The PURPOSE of
United Methodist Women
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women
whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through
Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand
concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the
church.
